Dosing Vodka - really?

After 10 months of dosing vodka in my tank, I felt it was time to do a synopsis.

Vodka Dosing - Why?

Here's a recent picture from my reef, with some of the new Lyretail Anthias

Reefcast: Epic Episode 30

This latest episode is Epic, so it was named Epic Episode 30. It is a video episode, and thus a large download. Be sure to save it to your computer rather than trying to stream it. Downloads page

My reef is doing quite well. Here's the latest image.

A few projects recently completed:

Vodka Dosing Drip System
Manifold Project - it only took 9 months to get this one accomplished, but two friends made it happen
VorTech Battery Backup Surgery
Algae Scraper - I waited on this one forever, but glad I finally got it

The angled tank is doing well, and has been cleaned up more since this picture was taken. I guess I got that backwards. LOL

Vodka update / Top Down Photography

After dosing vodka to my system for 10 weeks, I can definitely say it is helping reduce Nitrate and Phosphate in my system. One week ago, I tested PO4 and the result was zero, which I expected because I'd used Blue Life's Phosphate Control to get them down overnight. In the meantime, I'd fed my tank heavily and expected phosphates to rise. Today's test revealed it was still at zero. Yes! Nitrates are down to about 15ppm. I'm going to continue dosing until that number gets somewhere closer to 5ppm.

I took a series of pictures with a Top Down Photo Box last night. About the box: www.melevsreef.com/topdown.html

Vodka dosing

Another trip was added to my site recently: Peppermint Shrimp Collection Trip

I've had a few emails come in asking about how the Vodka dosing is going. I've been dosing daily for six weeks as of today. The last test results I took showed Nitrate at 25ppm, and Phosphate at .25ppm - so I'm still not to the point of making these numbers drop quite yet. However, during that time period, I didn't do any water changes because I wanted to see what the vodka could do, or not do. In all that time, I would have expected both of those numbers to rise quite a bit. As of tomorrow, I'll be dosing 5ml per day for a solid week. For more reading about Vodka Dosing, refer to this article in Reefkeeping Magazine: August 2008 issue

Here's a picture of my 5 year old Ocellaris. It was tank-raised by a DFWMAS member years ago, and has been happy in my reef tanks ever since.
