For a long time, I hated the returns on my tank. InterAmerican drills the return hole in the overflow box, below the teeth. On a larger tank like mine, a couple of inches equals a lot of water in the sump. So I solved it by adding twice as much locline, and had it shaped in an arch. At the apex of the arch, I drilled three holes in the underside to break the siphon and stop draining so much water. This worked great, until about 6 months ago when I soaked the locline in muriatic acid, which cracked the joints and allowed more water to seep out quietly.
I've been running the new VorTech pump in my tank for the past three weeks. I'd like to thank VorTech for letting beta-testers speak publicly about our impressions finally.
When I opened my box, I swear I heard angels in the heavens singing.
A few days ago, I heard a loud "pop!" but couldn't find the source. Since then, some random corals in my tank have not been doing well, and I couldn't figure out why since others were perfectly fine. I found the source.
I replaced this bulb with a new 400w XM bulb, and hope the corals will be able to recover.
If you'll take 10 minutes and a couple of common tools, you can alter a Maxijet to increase the flow in the tank quite a bit. I was told how to do this, and finally decided to try it out. It worked!
Using a hacksaw, I cut off the jet off the impellar cover.
After using Phosbuster Pro probably about 30 days ago, I'm still seeing cyano bacteria in my reef tank. I decided to go ahead and dose the tank with ChemiClean to erradicate this stuff so the corals don't risk getting smothered. I waited patiently but it isn't going away quickly enough.
During treatment, the skimmer is turned off for 48 hours. Time to make another 55g for a water change. The label states to change 20
The Hidden Treasure page has been updated with some new links. A video was added, the Pico tank page was added, the Model M sump was added, the Nano tank was added, and a few other items were corrected or cleaned up.
The Identification Page was updated and now there are 198 items listed. Some newcomers are:
Today, a new product arrived called PhosBuster Pro, by CaribSea. After following the directions closely and preparing the tank for the dosage, I added it and hoped for the best.
Six hours later, I tested the PO4 level and it had dropped from 1.5ppm to .25ppm or less. I'm very happy to finally see the phosphate level brought down significantly, and hope that I can set up my system to keep it that low from now on. I'll be sure to update this log with any changes.
Woohoo!!! The new sump is finally running!!!!!!!!!
For 8 months, all I've talked about is the new sump I was going to build. At last, it is done and installed.
The doorway got a little more crowded, but I'm happy.
Alright, how much does it cost to run my reef? A club member put together a nice page to enter the data, and I took a deep breath and filled in the fields.
These are my entries.
